Tom Cannon, the Senior Director and EP for Project L at Riot Games, announced that the upcoming 2D fighter featuring League of Legends champions will be completely free-to-play.

Cannon shared the good news on a developer diary he posted on his Twitter account, and also on Riot Games’ official YouTube channel. The experienced developer said one of their primary goals is to remove as many barriers as possible to make Project L an enjoyable experience for gamers. Cannon added:
“We want you to be able to play no matter where you live, what your skill level is, or how much money you have to spend on a game. To that, I’m happy to confirm that Project L will be free-to-play.”
This doesn’t come as a surprise, considering how other popular Riot Games titles are also free-to-play and earn revenue through in-game/in-app player spending. Games from Riot use the microtransactions model, but players can’t use their real-life money to gain an unfair advantage over other players. The microtransactions in these games are either a shortcut to unlocking champions and characters or purely cosmetic-related, like costumes or weapon skins.
Canon says the team behind Project L is made up of fighting game veterans and they’re quite passionate about what they’re coming up with. Canon assures the fans fun factor is extremely important to the team and adds that “If we wouldn’t like it, we won’t do it.”
The senior director also promises the game will be respectful to both players’ time and their wallets. The blog post also shows one of the popular League of Legends champions, Illaoi’s artwork, and how she’ll look and play in Project L.
Canon also said there’ll be at least one more update about the project before the year ends. There is still no news about which platforms Project L will come to.
