Tango Gameworks, the acclaimed Japanese video game developer known for titles such as The Evil Within series, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and Hi-Fi Rush, has officially become Tango Gameworks Inc. after its acquisition by South Korean publisher KRAFTON Inc.
This transition follows a turbulent period for the studio.
In May 2024, Microsoft announced plans to close several subsidiaries, including Tango Gameworks, as part of a strategic restructuring. The decision was met with widespread criticism, especially considering the recent success of Hi-Fi Rush, which had garnered significant acclaim for its innovative rhythm-action gameplay.
In August 2024, KRAFTON Inc., renowned for publishing titles like PUBG: Battlegrounds, intervened by acquiring Tango Gameworks and the rights to the Hi-Fi Rush intellectual property.
This move preserved the studio and marked Krafton’s first significant investment in the Japanese video game market, aligning with its strategy to expand its global footprint and enhance its portfolio with innovative content.
Future of Tango Gameworks Inc.
The integration of Tango Gameworks into Krafton is expected to have no impact on the availability of the studio’s existing game catalog, including The Evil Within, The Evil Within 2, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and the original Hi-Fi Rush.
Krafton has expressed its commitment to supporting Tango Gameworks in delivering fresh and exciting experiences for fans, indicating potential developments such as sequels or new projects under the KRAFTON umbrella.
Creative Director John Johanas shared his optimism about the future, stating:
“2024 had some of the highest highs and the lowest lows I’ve ever experienced, but it’s a blessing to be working with my friends, the team at Tango, on what will likely be a busy 2025. Truly a new start.”
