As of December 2021, rumors of a project called “Fortnite Token” began to be made on social media. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney denied that Fortnite Token, which is portrayed as a blockchain project related to Epic Games’ popular battle royale game Fortnite.
In the tweets compiled by PC Gamer, it is seen that various announcements were made from the account called Fortnite Token, and under these announcements, comments were left by Tim Sweeney as “This is a scam.” Tim Sweeney states that there is no crypto project related to Fortnite.
The token first appeared on Twitter back in December 2021 with a Tweet saying “Hello, World!” on an account named “Fortnite Token.” The same account posted the following “Fortnite Token NFTs market V1.2 just released. Take a look” on 6 June 2022, inviting people to check out the updated version of the token. Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic Games, caught it and responded to this tweet calling the whole thing a “scam.”
Fortnite Token account responded to Tim Sweeney’s comment as follows:
“Fortnite Token isn’t a scam cryptocurrency project. Instead, this is a fair-launch, community-driven, Fortnite game fans-created cryptocurrency project with no specified owner or company structure behind it or a CEO deciding on its future.”
Regardless of the purpose of the Fortnite Token, it uses the Fortnite brand and associated logos belonging to Epic Games without permission. Epic Games’ lawyers are following the legal processes regarding the issue.
