A newer version of PlayStation 5 has emerged in Australia, making it the first country to receive the latest version once again. The 2021 update to the hardware saw changes in the heatsink, making it lighter than the original version. It seems that the brand new third version is even lighter than the 2021 version.

The 2022 version arose right after Sony’s price revisions on the PlayStation 5. The newer versions might be the reason behind the price rise, but that’s yet to be confirmed by Sony. The most recent digital version is labeled CFI-1202B and weighs 500 grams lighter compared to the original digital release of PlayStation 5. The latest disc release labeled CFI-1202A is also lighter compared to its original counterpart by 600 grams.

There were speculations about newer generation PlayStation 5 consoles with newer AMD 6nm chipsets. Even though there isn’t much difference in performance between 6nm and 7nm chipsets, the 6nm versions are much easier to find.

Sony might’ve decided to switch to the newer chipset to increase production efficiency and deliver hardware more rapidly. Whether this shift has been applied or not is currently unknown. The reason behind the weight difference also remains a mystery for the time being.

The complete list for the PlayStation 5 weights is as follows:

  • Launch: Disc: 4.5kg / Digital: 3.9kg
  • 2021 Revision: Disc: 4.2kg / Digital: 3.6kg
  • 2022 Revision: Disc: 3.9kg / Digital: 3.4kg

It’s safe to assume that a hardware change of some form has been applied that would result in a weight difference. A newer chipset or another revision to the heatsink might be the answer. The PlayStation community will surely be waiting for an update announcement from Sony as soon as possible.
