Co-founder of French developer Drama Studios, Alexandre Spindler, has announced the studio has closed a Series A funding round led by Tencent.

Spindler said Drama Studios began as a two-person effort “in our bedrooms,” led by himself and Théo Hiribarne, spending months iterating on prototypes before settling on the concept that became Unrecord. He added that the studio’s debut trailer, released in 2023, has now surpassed 90 million views, while Unrecord has crossed 1.5 million wishlists on Steam.

Corentin Hery, who initially helped manage inbound communication after the trailer’s reception, has become a co-founder and now serves as Drama Studios’ chief strategy officer. Laurent Bodin has joined the founding group after helping establish the operational and organizational foundations of the company.

“In Tencent, we found not just a world-class partner, but a team genuinely passionate about our game and vision. Despite its scale, Tencent has approached this partnership with humility, respect, and a real appreciation for our creative identity. It believed in Unrecord early and has supported us at every stage of our growth. We’re confident this collaboration will help us reach our full potential.”

“Tencent believes deeply in creative talent. We’ve been consistently impressed by the drive and dynamism of Drama Studios, and the remarkable progress it has made on Unrecord, especially with such a small team and limited resources.

This investment will help the studio unlock its full potential and deliver the first of many outstanding games. We’re excited to be part of Drama Studios’ journey.”

The studio received $2.5 million in a seed series investment from The Games Fund in September 2024.

Ilia Eremeev, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of The Games Fund said:

The Games Fund led the pre-seed round in Drama Studios, and we are proud to be a part of this journey. We are grateful to the team for choosing TGF as their first partner.

We welcome Tencent to this venture. As the founders of Drama Studios have noted, even at this early stage, we recognize and appreciate the collaborative spirit of the Tencent team, and we are hyped about this partnership. It truly is the best fit possible.

Drama Studios is a unique, unconventional, and bold team, and I look forward to the upcoming news releases regarding Unrecord.
