Epic Games Store is now one of the biggest stores on computers. The company behind it is giving away free games weekly and is taking less revenue share than other stores like Steam. Back in 2018, Epic shared its plans about bringing its store to Android and iOS in 2019. As you can already see, 2019 has passed and the store didn’t make it. In a recent interview, the company assured that it is still working on bringing the store to mobile devices.
Bringing Epic Games Store will help the industry to move forward
Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic Games said that launching the store will help the industry to move forward. In his interview with GameSpot, Sweeney said the following:
We’d like to bring the [Epic Games] Store to iOS in the future, and we will bring it to Android. We think it’s a good way to help the industry [move] forward and it’s another way where Epic as a game developer had built up this audience around Fortnite and learned how to operate a distribution platform on PC and Android. Now, as we’ve done with many things from the Unreal Engine to the Epic Online services, we open it up to all other developers to use with their games and are trying to serve the industry and provide a really interesting alternative to the ecosystem.
Back in April, the company released Fortnite on Google Play after a long survival period outside the main store. It said in a statement to Polygon that “Google puts software downloadable outside of Google Play at a disadvantage”. Therefore, it’s interesting to such a distribution platform on Android and iOS too.
It might be closer than we think
In the last quarter of 2019, Epic changed the Fortnite installer on Android to the Epic Games app. When we might see Epic Games Store on both Android and iOS? We don’t know yet but we know that Fortnite’s success is not stopping anytime soon. The game surpassed $1 billion in revenue last month.
