The Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), the organizer behind the Tokyo Game Show, has revealed that more than half of Japanese game companies are now incorporating artificial intelligence into their development processes.

According to a preview of the 2025 CESA Video Game Industry Report, conducted between June and July this year, 51 percent of surveyed Japanese firms confirmed that they are using generative AI tools in game development. The findings were presented ahead of the report’s full release and were also highlighted by Nikkei.

A Growing Trend in Development

CESA’s survey included responses from 54 Japanese game companies, reflecting a broad cross-section of the country’s industry. The adoption of generative AI ranged from experimental use in concept art and narrative prototyping to integration into core production workflows.

While the preview did not disclose individual company names, industry analysts suggest that major publishers as well as mid-sized studios are increasingly experimenting with AI to streamline development and reduce costs.

Wider Context

Japan’s findings align with global trends. Studios in North America, Europe, and Asia have also accelerated their use of AI for creative assistance, asset generation, and user experience testing.
