Mark Zuckerberg recently appeared on Joe Rogan’s podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience. Besides announcing the date for the anticipated VR headset, he also mentioned the presence of the new social functions of the headset, which will be enabled by eye and face tracking. With this function, the avatars will be more expressive, making it feel like the users communicate face-to-face.

Meta CEO explained the importance of more expressive avatars:

“There’s more nonverbal communication when people are with each other than verbal communication. Have your face be tracked so that way your avatar [is] not just this still thing, but if you smile or if you frown or if you pout…have that translate in real-time to your avatar.”

The headset’s code name is Project Cambria, and it’s rumored that the retail price will be higher than $800, which shows it will target the high end. The previous model, Meta Quest 2, sold for $350, but it’s the basic model. If users want to buy the 128 GB version, the prices go up to $449, and the 256 GB model is sold for $549.

A couple of months ago, while presenting the financial results of his company, Mark Zuckerberg announced that this helmet would be intended for professionals and that it could replace a laptop PC or a work environment.

The coming months will be interesting for those waiting for VR headsets. Sony revealed PlayStation VR2 will hit the market in early 2023. The exact date is not yet announced.
