Midjiwan, the award-winning independent studio behind The Battle of Polytopia, announced that the game has passed 25 million organic downloads on mobile.

Founded in 2016 as a Flash game, The Battle of Polytopia has since grown into a thriving indie IP with a dedicated player base. The game is completely skill-based with no in-game currency and only expansions and cosmetics for sale.

The majority of Polytopia’s downloads are on mobile – across the Apple App Store and Google Play – an unusual statistic for a 4X strategy game, which are usually found in desktop format. The game is also available on Nintendo Switch, Epic Games Store, and Steam.

Polytopia’s continued success can be linked to its lack of aggressive monetisation models, accessible design, and dedicated community. Players regularly post and communicate in the official Discord group and r/Polytopia, which is in the top 3% of all Reddit communities. The game has also been featured countless times on YouTube, where players explore strategies and maps, complete weekly challenges, and more.

“The success of Polytopia makes it clear: players want quality mobile games driven by creativity and community, not aggressive monetisation. It is wonderful to know that the game has surpassed 25 million downloads – thank you to all the players who have downloaded it and continue to engage with the community.”

Developer Midjiwan continues to be a small studio team in Stockholm with a purpose, investing a portion of all revenue into charities and initiatives like Solar Power.

Polytopia continues to grow its community through a range of player initiatives, including its first ever eSports World Championship this year.

  • Players can apply throughout October and November to compete in the tournament, which will culminate in a final round in early December.

  • The tournament will focus on Polytopia’s ‘Might’ game mode, with ‘single elimination’ matches, across a best-of-three format.

  • The winner will receive $4,000, the runner-up will take away $2,000, the third and fourth place finishers will get $1,500, and the fifth and sixth place $500.

Players can apply through the Polytopia Official Space on the Challengermode esports platform or inside the game itself by selecting Multiplayer > Tournaments.
