Sony acquires Bungie.

Sony has recently acquired Bungie, the name behind successful titles such as Destiny and Halo, for $3.6 billion. This move from Sony, following Microsoft’s $68 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard, becomes one of the most striking news of the last period for the game industry, although it does not have as much repercussions as Microsoft.

Bungie will remain an independent studio and distributor, not tied to a single platform. Accordingly, Bungie will both continue to offer a cross-platform experience for Destiny players and guarantee that the games to be released by Bungie in the coming periods will not be exclusive to PlayStation.

In the statement made on the official PlayStation blog, it is stated that PlayStation and Bungie have had a solid partnership for many years. Noting that they spent a lot of time with the Bungie management team to develop the right relationship that supports collaboration and information sharing, the PlayStation team said that they are incredibly excited to collaborate with Bungie.

After the deal, Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan said the following:

“Bungie’s world-class expertise in multi-platform development and live game services will help us deliver on our vision of expanding PlayStation to hundreds of millions of gamers. Bungie is a great innovator and has developed incredible proprietary tools that will help PlayStation Studios achieve new heights under Hermen Hulst’s leadership.”

Head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst continued:

“Bungie makes games with outstanding technology that are enormously fun to play. They also have unmatched dedication to the communities that play their games, and everyone at PlayStation, and PlayStation Studios, will be excited about what we can share and learn from them.”
