Today raises $5 million for AI-powered social sim gaming

TODAY, a next-generation social simulation game focused on cultivating virtual island communities has secured $5 million in a seed funding round. 

The investment was co-led by Sfermion and Big Brain, with additional participation from GSR, Collab+Currency, Lingfeng Innovation Fund, Compute Ventures, Builder Capital, as well as individual investors Tommy Tran, Metavest Capital, 32 Bit Ventures, Dingaling, Grail, and Spirit DAO.

The funding will primarily support the further development of TODAY’s proprietary character engine, which employs advanced AI technology to create intelligent Non-Playable Characters (NPCs). Additionally, resources will be allocated to expanding the game’s no-code creator tools, empowering players to build and customize their virtual islands within TODAY’s immersive universe.

TODAY distinguishes itself with its AI-driven NPC interactions, which aim to replicate the nuances of real-life conversations and deepen player immersion. By providing NPCs with a depth of character and responsiveness, the game offers a dynamic and ever-evolving social simulation experience. Co-founder Michael O’Connor highlights the importance of realistic NPC interactions in enhancing player engagement and fostering genuine relationships within the game.

The development team behind TODAY comprises industry veterans with experience at prominent companies such as Nintendo, SEGA, Epic Games, and Unity. Their storytelling and game development expertise contribute to crafting emotionally resonant gameplay experiences that evolve with each player’s actions.
