Gaming giant Electronic Arts announced that it has developed a new mobile game based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s world-famous The Lord of the Rings book series. The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth will soon be released as free-to-play.
The game is developed under license from Middle-earth Enterprises. Middle-earth Enterprises is a subsidiary of the Saul Zaentz Company, which has held the copyrights to Tolkien’s works since 1976.
According to VentureBeat, The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth appeals to old fans of the series and tries to reach a new audience. The game is described as a strategic, social-competitive, and collectible role-playing game.
Capital Games undertakes the development of the game. Capital Games, which previously developed Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, seems like a suitable studio for developing themed universe games.
Malachi Boyle, Vice President and General Manager of Electronic Arts, said:
“We are incredibly excited to partner with The Saul Zaentz Company and Middle-earth Enterprises on the next generation of mobile role-playing games. The team is filled with fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and each day they bring their tremendous passion and talents together to deliver an authentic experience for players. The combination of high-fidelity graphics, cinematic animations, and stylized art immerses players in the fantasy of Middle-earth where they’ll go head-to-head with their favorite characters.”
Electronic Arts bought Glu Mobile for $2.4 billion and Playdemic for $1.4 billion to expand its mobile operations. With the new The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth game, Electronic Arts is preparing to consolidate its position in the mobile game market. The game is expected to enter the limited beta in 2022 summer.
