Volition, the development studio renowned for its work on the Saints Row series, has announced that it has ceased operations. This unexpected closure is attributed to a restructuring initiative undertaken by its parent company, Embracer Group. The studio explained its closure in a statement, citing Embracer Group’s June announcement of a restructuring program designed to fortify its position as a leader in the video game industry. As part of this program, the company scrutinized its strategic and operational objectives, leading to the decision to shutter Volition immediately. The studio emphasized that its employees would receive support to facilitate a smooth transition, while Volition expressed gratitude to its dedicated fan base.

Volition’s history traces back to 1993, when it was called Parallax Software Corporation. Several years later, the team split off to establish Volition. The studio was acquired by THQ in 2000, and after THQ’s bankruptcy in 2012, it became a subsidiary of Koch Media, later known as Plaion, operating under its Deep Silver division.
Apart from the iconic Saints Row series, Volition created the Descent games and the Red Faction franchise. Its final project was the 2022 reboot of Saints Row, which received mixed reviews. PS Plus subscribers will have the opportunity to claim the game at no additional cost in September.
Embracer Group’s June announcement foreshadowed layoffs and studio closures as part of its broader restructuring plan. The company, known for acquiring numerous game studios and notable franchises, mentioned the loss of a $2 billion investment opportunity that had been in the works but ultimately fell through at the last moment. According to Axios, this investment opportunity was previously verbally agreed with the Saudi government-funded Savvy Games Group.
