Germany has increased the national budget for games support from €50 million to €70 million($73 million). The national fund was first established in June 2019 and was fully launched in 2020. Ever since its launch, the fund has had a great initial success, which prompted the increase in budget.
Within the two-year period since 2020, the number of game companies has increased by 26%, and the number of people employed by developers and publishers has increased by 12%. This growth exhausted the annual budget of the fund, making an increase in funding necessary to continue supporting game development.
According to the German Games Industry Association, game’s forecast, the funding program will require €100 million annually in the coming years.
Felix Falk, Managing Director of game commented,
“The provision of this additional games funding sends a powerful signal. It will enable Germany to continue its pursuit of becoming one of the world’s top locations for game development. With these steps, the German Bundestag and the federal government are renewing their promise to make Germany a leading market for games on the international stage.”
German Games Industry Association’s members include developers, publishers, and many other game industry actors such as esports event organizers, educational establishments, and service providers. As a joint organizer of Gamescom, they are responsible for one of the world’s biggest events for computer and video games.
