The days of Mojang’s AR game Minecraft Earth are numbered. In a blog post, the company announced that the latest update for Minecraft Earth has been released and the game will be shut down completely in June.
“Minecraft Earth was designed around free movement and collaborative play – two things that have become near impossible in the current global situation. As a result, we have made the difficult decision to re-allocate our resources to other areas that provide value to the Minecraft community and to end support for Minecraft Earth in June 2021.”
The game, which was released in October 2019, experienced a successful launch with more than 2.5 million downloads in its first month. Unfortunately, the pandemic caused the days of the popular AR game to be over. The quarantine period has led to a difficult year for many location-based games. For example, Pokemon Go is one of the games that became playable without leaving home with the updates it received and maintained its popularity. Mojang, who took similar actions with Niantic, made a few changes in May to make the game enjoyable at home. Nevertheless, despite these changes, it was decided that the game could no longer be sustained.
Mojang will delete all player data unrelated to Character Creator and Minecoin privileges on July 1. All users who make purchases in Minecraft Earth will be given a free copy of Minecraft. As of today, those whose accounts have a paid ruby balance will receive Minecoins, which can be used in the Minecraft Marketplace and the character creator.
