The BAFTA-winning video game studio Supermassive Games is acquired by Nordisk Games. The investment company initially bought 30.7% of Supermassive last year, and now they announced the full acquisition of the highly successful developer.
Supermassive Games is mainly known for its critically acclaimed titles Until Dawn and Dark Pictures Anthology. The studio also released The Quarry on June 10, 2022, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Series S, and PC.
The studio was founded back in 2008 by Pete Samuels and Joe Samuels, and most of their popular titles are cinematic horror experiences. Nordisk Games is owned by Nordisk Film, hence the acquisition makes even more sense given how both companies are heavily focused on storytelling and providing interactive cinematic experiences.
The CEO of Supermassive Games, Pete Samuels said they’ve had a positive experience with Nordisk Games ever since the initial investment and Supermassive Games didn’t find it hard to allow Nordisk to fully acquire the studio. Samuels followed his statement with:
“We have an exciting and ambitious growth strategy for Supermassive Games and Nordisk Games ownership only enhances that. I’m hugely excited about where the security offered by this partnership, and continued access to the expertise within Nordisk Games will take us next.”
Mikkel Weider, CEO of Nordisk Games shares a similar feeling with Pete Samuels. The experienced businessman said:
“In the year we’ve worked alongside Pete and Joe and the whole Supermassive team, it’s been clear to us the amount of talent, as well as how much potential there is to further develop the kinds of story and narrative-driven games they excel at.
“In acquiring 100% of the studio we’ll be able to increase our support to the team, and most importantly, continue the great working relationship we have with them.”
Nordisk Games has been investing in the video games market for some time now, growing its portfolio with game studios that include Avalanche Studios Group, Star Stable Entertainment, Flashbulb Games, Nitro Games, and MercurySteam.
