Playable Worlds has announced that it has raised $25 million from its Series B funding round for its cloud-based, multiplayer sandbox game. Behind the company are experienced founders from Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies.
Playable Worlds was founded in 2018 by Raph Koster and Eric Goldberg. Raph Koster previously worked as the Chief Game Designer of the legendary game Ultima Online. Eric Goldberg was the designer of the MadMaze.
The funding round was led by Kakao Games Corp, with Bitkraft Ventures and Galaxy Interactive participation. Lilith Games and Gaingels also joined the round as new participants.
The company said it would use this $25 million in funding to expand its team and develop a cloud-based, multiplayer sandbox game. Raph Koster did not provide information about this new sandbox game but said that the cloud-based technology they developed is operational. Playable Worlds believes that cloud-based games have an important place in the future game industry.
Koster added:
“While we’re not yet ready to peel back the curtains, this funding round will help accelerate us closer to sharing more with prospective players, with a focus on providing a deeper and more meaningful experience consisting of rich simulations, organic content growth, and social mechanics.”
Playable Worlds dreams of creating a “persistent and real alternative world” with this sandbox game. The details of the game have not been announced yet.
