Niantic, one of the first companies that come to mind when AR games are mentioned, is laying off 8% of its employees. This ratio corresponds to approximately 85 to 90 people. In addition, Niantic will cancel four new projects because of this contraction.
The Niantic’s insource email, obtained by Bloomberg News games reporter Jason Schreier, says the company is “facing a time of economic turmoil.”
Among the canceled games are projects such as Transformers Heavy Metal and Hamlet, which were announced last year. Also, there are other unannounced projects canceled called Snowball and Blue Sky.
A Niantic spokesperson said the following about the layoffs;
“We recently decided to stop production on some projects and reduce our workforce by about 8% to focus on our key priorities. We are grateful for the contributions of those leaving Niantic and we are supporting them through this difficult transition.”
The consequences of the economic recession in the world are emerging day by day. Many large companies, including Tencent, continue to lay off most of their employees.
