Tencent’s revenue in gaming jumped by 36% as a result of the pandemic

Even though, most of us know Tencent as the owner of WeChat, which is called “the application for everything in China”, Tencent’s revenue source is mostly from the games it has published. There are many popular mobile games that bring revenue to Tencent, like PUBG Mobile, Peacekeeper Elite, and Honor of Kings. Other popular games in the world like League of Legends, Fortnite, and Clash of Clans‘ stakes are also controlled by the famous game publisher company, Tencent.

According to the data verified by Statista, Tencent increased its revenue in gaming exactly ten times. This means that the gaming revenue increased from 1.5 billion dollars to 15.1 billion dollars between 2010 and 2017. Tencent’s revenue, however, had a slower growth, a modest %5 increase year-over-year, during 2018 because of the nine-month game licensing freeze from China’s State Administration of Press and Publications. Even though the end result of 2018 was 17.7 billion dollars, statistics show us that 2020 was the best year in terms of increased revenue rates in the company’s history. Moreover, Tencent managed to publish four new mobile games during the last quarter of 2020 in China, which is known as the goldmine of online gaming. During that period, PUBG Mobile ranked as the most popular mobile game worldwide by monthly active users. Call of Duty Mobile showed the highest DAU for a game launched in 2020, while League of Legends attracted over 45 million peak concurrent players for the 2020 World Championship Finals, a new record for an e-sports event. On the other hand, Honor of Kings kept first place in the top-grossing mobile games list worldwide.

In conclusion, Tencent’s revenue in gaming had a skyrocketing effect by hitting 24.1 billion dollars last year, which is an extraordinary 36% increase year-over-year.
