At the end of July 2022, The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) went on a banning spree and blocked Steam, Epic Games, Nintendo, Origin, and many other gaming and tech platforms. However, Steam is finally back up following its registration to Kominfo.
The Indonesian government’s new regulation required all video games and tech companies to register to Kominfo, be they local or international, but numerous big names failed to register in time and saw their platforms blocked in the country.
According to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad’s tweet, Steam is officially unbanned in Indonesia and gamers can access every service and game Valve provides in the region. Other gaming giants like Epic Games and Electronic Arts’ Origin are still blocked, though. Ahmad’s following tweet said Paypal and Yahoo services are back up too, meaning post-ban registrations are processed quite fast, and Indonesian gamers can hope for Epic to come back soon as well.
Reuters reports that the new regulations have also been signed by Google, Spotify, Netflix, and TikTok. Given how the video gaming and streaming space is quite big in Indonesia, having all these services and platforms back as soon as possible must have been a relief for the game industry workers.
