GEM Capital on AppMagic’s acquisition by Sensor Tower – Interview with Roman & Kirill Gurskiy

We spoke with GEM Capital Managing Directors Roman and Kirill Gurskiy to discuss what convinced them to invest in AppMagic early, the decisions that drove the company’s value, why app intelligence has become indispensable, and how AI could reshape the future of market intelligence for game developers and app publishers.

What initially convinced you to invest in AppMagic when the company was still relatively early-stage?

Kirill Gurskiy: To put it simply, we fell in love with Max Samorukov, the founder of AppMagic, and the product he was building. Over the years of our partnership, we became even more convinced that Max is one of the sharpest and most experienced minds in the gaming industry, with a profound understanding of market trends and a unique ability to explain them in simple terms. These strengths are directly reflected in AppMagic. The platform has always stood out due to its clean, intuitive UI/UX, which helps users cut through the noise and get straight to the core of the data.

Roman Gurskiy: Furthermore, at the time of our entry, we anticipated the upcoming consolidation in the market data and analytics sector. At GEM Capital, we always evaluate potential exit opportunities even before making an investment decision. In this case, our strategic calculation proved 100% correct.

Max Samorukov – Founder of AppMagic

Looking back, what were the most important decisions the AppMagic team made that ultimately increased the company’s value?

Kirill Gurskiy: First and foremost, AppMagic never stood still. They always listened to the developer community and adapted rapidly to industry shifts like privacy changes. Expanding into PC/console by launching Steam analytics was a brilliant move, accelerating their journey toward becoming a truly unified cross-platform analytics solution.

Roman Gurskiy: At the same time, the team managed to maintain an incredibly intuitive UX core user experience as they scaled and added new features. This talent for translating complex data into a simple, user-friendly format is one of AppMagic’s key USPs. Coupled with ensuring data reliability and maintaining a flexible pricing policy, this is exactly how they won the love and respect of clients worldwide.

What are the hardest parts of building a data-driven business like AppMagic — especially around data collection, accuracy, and scaling the product globally?

Kirill Gurskiy: In this business, you are always solving puzzles. There are just no complete, clear data sources out there – something is always missing or fragmented. The real mastery in building a data-driven company comes down to analyzing all these different data points, factoring in every nuance, and making analytical models to connect the dots.

Roman Gurskiy: The other side of the coin is sales. Like in any B2B SaaS business, sales drive everything. Building and scaling an experienced sales team across various global regions is incredibly tough, and AppMagic executed this beautifully.

Many observers view this acquisition as a move toward serving SMB and indie developers more effectively. Do you agree with that interpretation?

Kirill Gurskiy: We agree with that interpretation, but it is only one piece of a larger story. AppMagic has always been championed by SMBs and indie developers for its accessibility, transparency, and value proposition. Joining forces with Sensor Tower creates a beautifully balanced powerhouse. It combines Sensor Tower’s gold-standard enterprise capabilities with AppMagic’s market-leading mid-market footprint.

Roman Gurskiy: This acquisition effectively creates a unified ecosystem that serves the entire spectrum of the games industry. Whether you are a solo indie developer prototyping a passion project or a global publisher optimizing a multi-billion dollar portfolio, the combined entity now offers the most comprehensive, accessible, and precise intelligence suite on the market.

How did Sensor Tower’s acquisition process begin, and at what point did it become clear that Sensor Tower was the right strategic buyer?

Kirill Gurskiy: The process began naturally through mutual industry respect. In the app intelligence space, top players monitor each other closely, and it was clear early on that both companies shared a deep passion for data excellence. As initial conversations progressed, the strategic alignment became undeniable. It quickly evolved past a standard financial transaction into a true meeting of minds on how the future of market intelligence should look.

What types of data are becoming increasingly valuable that weren’t considered critical a few years ago?

Kirill Gurskiy: First, looking at immediate market challenges, LiveOps tracking and creative intelligence have shifted from ‘nice-to-have’ features to absolute must-haves. With user acquisition costs soaring, understanding your peers’ in-game events, feature updates, and ad creative performance is a must to stay competitive.

Roman Gurskiy: Second, regarding global industry shifts, we at GEM Capital anticipate a major migration of transactions toward alternative stores and web shops. If you are analyzing the mobile space today, you simply cannot ignore these elephants in the room. The first company to offer a unified solution covering everything – App Store, Google Play, web shops, and alternative app stores – will trigger a massive breakthrough. But executing on this is an incredibly complex puzzle to solve.

AppMagic LiveOps Report for 2025

Do you believe app intelligence is becoming a necessity rather than a competitive advantage?

Kirill Gurskiy: Without a doubt, app intelligence has transitioned into an absolute baseline requirement for survival. The mobile market is far too mature, crowded, and capital-intensive to rely on gut feeling or trial-and-error. Operating a mobile business today without precise market data is the equivalent of flying a commercial airliner completely blind. Every critical business decision – from greenlighting a project and choosing an art style to structuring a soft launch or defining a user acquisition budget – requires rigorous data validation. App intelligence doesn’t just give you an edge over your competitors anymore, it is what keeps you in the game.

How do you expect AI to change the way developers use market intelligence tools? Could AI eventually replace much of the manual analysis currently performed by game studios and app publishers?

Roman Gurskiy: At GEM Capital, we see AI transforming market intelligence from a lookup tool into a true conversational partner. Rather than waiting for data analysts to pull spreadsheets and build models to spot trends, AI layers will allow product managers to ask natural-language questions and get instant market data on demand. This collapses decision-making cycles from weeks to minutes.

Kirill Gurskiy: Will AI replace manual analysis? It will certainly automate the grunt work – specifically the repetitive data crunching and anomaly detection. But it won’t replace the human element. The real magic in gaming comes from translating data into creative execution. Understanding player psychology, taking calculated artistic risks, and crafting unique gameplay experiences require human intuition. AI will simply liberate studios from spreadsheets, giving them the freedom to focus 100% on creative innovation.
