The game will benefit from the brand name of Netflix and will be able to reach a broader audience with so many languages supported. An Oxenfree illustration collection in collaboration with artist Trevor Henderson and a re-release of the Oxenfree soundtrack is also available now, along with the new edition of the game.

Night School Studio’s Co-Founder and Lead Writer of Oxenfree, Adam Hines, explains the game’s genre and storyline with these remarks:

“You play as Alex, a 16-year-old being introduced to her new stepbrother, and while meeting up with some friends on a remote beach, you accidentally open a rift through time, unleashing spirits who threaten your very existence. The gameplay is all about exploration and conversation, as you juggle dealing with the supernatural and the personal relationships within your high school clique.”

The 2016 iteration of the game was nominated for a variety of awards in several events, especially for best narrative. Robert Kirkman, best known as the writer of The Walking Dead comic book series, had reportedly wanted to collaborate with the studio for a movie adaptation. This idea didn’t come to fruition but later shifted into a planned TV series in 2021.

Night School has been working on a sequel titled Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals since 2021, with MWM Interactive acting as publisher. The sequel will be launched on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, but the exact date is unknown at this point.

Netflix has also announced more games coming this fall. Kentucky Route Zero, Desta: The Memories Between, Spongebob Squarepants: Get Cooking, Nailed It! Baking Bash, Narcos: Cartel Wars Unlimited, and Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales will be the platform’s upcoming launches.
