During the ongoing pandemic, we saw a surge in mobile game downloads and sessions. Gaming is what a lot of people did during the lockdown and a recent report from App Annie shows us how are mobile games doing in Q2 2020. First, weekly mobile game downloads reached a new milestone! Each week, downloads reached 1.2 billion and it remained at 1 billion on average throughout the quarter, up 20% year over year. Furthermore, users spend more than $49 billion on purchases through the app stores in the same period.

Users downloaded 14 billion mobile games in Q2 2020

In the second quarter of the year, new game downloads grew 20% year over year to about 3 billion on iOS. On Android, Game downloads grew 25% year over year and reached over 11 billion downloads. According to App Annie, games accounted for a higher share of overall downloads on Google Play than on iOS at 45% and 30%, respectively. India and Brazil are the leading game downloads on Google Play. In terms of largest growth of downloads over a quarter, India and Indonesia rank first. When it comes to genres, Casual, Action, and Board games were the most popular genres. Applovin’s Save The Girl led the growth in the Casual category while Sea’s Free Fire led the Action category.

On iOS, the United States and China were the biggest markets in Q2 2020. Saudi Arabia and India were the two largest drivers of growth quarter over quarter. The most popular genre on iOS is Arcade and it was followed by Action and Simulation. Playrix’ s Fishdom: Deep Dive led the Simulation category while Roblox led the Adventure category.

Spending surpassed $19 billion in Q2 2020

As we mentioned above, there is a strong growth in consumer spend on both platforms. Google Play, however, saw standout growth at 25% quarter over quarter — over 2x the growth rate on iOS. Games also accounted for the majority of consumer spend across both stores at 85% on Google Play and 65% on iOS. The United States was the largest market for the App Store and Google Play.
