The download counts painted a different picture, as App Store reached 24.1 billion installs in the first three quarters of 2022, which remains unchanged compared to last year. Google Play Store amassed over 82 billion downloads, almost three and a half times more than App Store.
However, year-over-year download numbers saw a decrease of 1.5 billion for Play Store. The download total has also decreased by 1.6 billion compared to the first three quarters of 2021.
Data received from Sensor Tower, Statista, and TechCrunch indicated Apple’s App Store grew at its slowest rate in years. The platform amassed $64.9 billion on in-app purchases, which is 3% more in a year-over-year comparison. On the other side of the coin, Play Store saw a revenue decline of 11%.
Although the difference in revenue can be attributed to regional differences between platforms, it’s safe to say that the mobile app climate has changed significantly since Apple’s privacy updates. A recent report from AppsFlyer indicated a threefold Apple Search Ads share growth.
Microsoft is also looking to scale Xbox Store to mobile in order to attract gamers on another platform. The company plans to open an Xbox mobile gaming store to rival Google Play and App Store.
