Puzzle and merge continue to lead casual games growth in H1 2026

The casual mobile games market maintained its momentum during the first half of 2026, generating approximately $11 billion in in-app purchase (IAP) revenue, according to AppMagic’s latest Casual Games Report H1 2026. While overall revenue remained relatively stable compared to the same period last year, the report reveals notable shifts across genres as publishers continue to refine monetization strategies, invest in live operations, and expand successful franchises.

Growth is increasingly concentrated within a handful of high-performing subgenres, while the broader casual market remains stable. Established categories continue to dominate overall revenue, but evolving gameplay trends and hybrid monetization models are creating new opportunities for developers and publishers looking to compete in an increasingly mature market.

Puzzle Continues to Dominate the Casual Market

Puzzle remains the largest casual genre, accounting for more than 44% of total casual game revenue during H1 2026. The genre continues to benefit from exceptional player retention and long product lifecycles, allowing top-performing titles to generate substantial revenue years after launch.

Within Puzzle, Match-3 remains the market leader, producing approximately $2.5 billion in player spending during the first six months of the year. Although annual growth has moderated compared to previous years, the category continues to demonstrate remarkable stability.

Royal Match remains one of the market’s strongest performers, while Candy Crush Saga continues to rank among the highest-grossing mobile games despite being more than a decade old. At the same time, Royal Kingdom has established itself as one of the industry’s fastest-growing releases, demonstrating that new entries can still achieve significant scale in the highly competitive Match-3 segment.

Among the standout performers highlighted in the report is Match Villains from Good Job Games, which has quickly positioned itself as one of the category’s most promising newer titles. Its success illustrates that innovative mechanics, polished live operations, and consistent content updates can still help developers compete against long-established leaders.

Merge Games Continue Their Upward Trajectory

Merge remains one of the fastest-growing subgenres within the casual games market.

Data from AppMagic shows that Merge games generated approximately $1.3 billion in IAP revenue during H1 2026, continuing the genre’s impressive growth over the past several years.

Titles such as Gossip Harbor, Travel Town, and Tasty Travels continue to attract large audiences by combining accessible gameplay with long-term progression systems, frequent content updates, and event-driven monetization.

Rather than relying purely on download volume, many leading Merge games have focused on improving player retention and increasing lifetime value through seasonal events, collection mechanics, and carefully balanced in-game economies. These strategies have enabled publishers to sustain revenue growth even as user acquisition costs continue to increase across the mobile industry.

Established Genres Continue to Evolve

Beyond Puzzle and Merge, the analysis also examines how several mature genres continue to perform through continuous product evolution.

Farming games remain strong revenue generators by expanding their live service features and introducing regular content updates that encourage long-term engagement. Meanwhile, traditional simulation and decoration-focused experiences continue to attract loyal audiences despite limited expansion across the broader market.

Another notable trend is the continued rise of Hybridcasual design principles. Rather than existing as a standalone genre, hybrid mechanics are becoming increasingly common across casual games, combining highly accessible gameplay with deeper progression systems, stronger meta layers, and monetization mechanics traditionally associated with midcore experiences.

This shift reflects a broader evolution within mobile gaming, where publishers are placing greater emphasis on player retention, engagement, and long-term monetization instead of relying solely on rapid download growth.

Live Operations Become a Key Competitive Advantage

One of the report’s key findings is the growing importance of live operations in sustaining long-term success.

Publishers continue to invest heavily in limited-time events, battle pass-style progression systems, personalization features, and frequent content updates designed to extend player lifetime value. Combined with increasingly sophisticated user acquisition strategies, these systems have become essential for maintaining competitiveness in a mature market.

The market’s highest-grossing casual games increasingly derive their success from continuous live operations, retention-focused design, and ongoing content updates rather than entirely new gameplay concepts. As competition intensifies, execution after launch has become just as important as the game’s initial release.

A Mature Market with New Growth Opportunities

Overall, the H1 2026 data points to a healthy but increasingly competitive casual games market. While total revenue growth has slowed, publishers continue to identify new opportunities through genre innovation, stronger live operations, and more sophisticated monetization strategies.

Puzzle remains the industry’s dominant revenue driver, Merge continues to outperform most other subgenres in terms of growth, and Hybridcasual mechanics are becoming increasingly widespread across the market. Together, these trends illustrate how the casual games landscape continues to evolve as publishers adapt to changing player expectations and a more mature mobile ecosystem.
