Just this month, Nintendo said they won’t be attending Gamescom this year. The expo already took two major hits with Activision Blizzard and Take-Two opting out of it for the 2022 edition, and now another industry giant, PlayStation says they’ll skip Gamescom 2022.

The source of the news is Games Wirtschaft, they were the first to announce Nintendo’s exit from Gamescom as well. Per their report, Sony officially confirmed that the company won’t take part in this year’s Gamescom that will take place in Cologne.
An ambitious financial year awaits PlayStation since Sony announced that they’re expecting about $300 million from PC games in 2022. The PlayStation bosses were present at Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest 2022, and the gaming giant sort of showed its hand at the event, announcing Insomniac’s Spider-Man and Naughty Dog’s The last of Us for PC. The latter title will also get a remake for PS5, set to release on September 2.
When is Gamescom 2022 and what shall we expect?
Gamescom will run between the 23rd and 28th of August in Cologne, coming back as a physical event after skipping multiple editions since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gamescom will have an extensive digital program as well.
With key studios and publishers deciding to skip Europe’s largest video games expo, Gamescom needs to pull a miracle to grab everyone’s attention. Summer Games Fest wasn’t exactly doing that amazing either, but toward the end of the event Microsoft’s Phil Spencer announced an unexpected partnership with Hideo Kojima to make the industry legend’s “dream game”, and that made some big waves.
