The popular fighting game Mortal Kombat is coming to mobile devices with a brand new role-playing game dubbed Mortal Kombat: Onslaught. The upcoming mobile game is being developed by NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games will handle the global distribution. The game is set to launch in 2023, but there’s no set-in-stone date for when it will arrive.

Players will build teams of fighters from Mortal Kombat’s rich portfolio of characters and unleash them in big real-time group battles to stop a mysterious threat from destroying the realms of the game’s universe. Warner Bros. Games claims Mortal Kombat: Onslaught will feature console-quality cinematic story experiences.

David Haddad, President of Warner Bros. Games said, “Mortal Kombat is a legendary franchise and pop culture phenomenon, and it continues to engage players and advance the fighting genre across multiple platforms,” and added “Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is a testament to why Mortal Kombat has been a top gaming franchise for over 30 years, as the NetherRealm team continues to innovate and bring new gameplay to fans.”

Earlier this summer, during the Warner Bros. and Discovery merger, David Haddad was confident that Warner Bros. Games wouldn’t be axed, and cooking up a new mobile project with a popular franchise like Mortal Kombat backs this claim strongly.

Ed Boon, Chief Creative Officer, NetherRealm Studios also commented, “We are pushing the boundaries of Mortal Kombat to allow players to experience the franchise in new ways, while still staying true to its core visceral nature,” and added, “With Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, we reimagined Mortal Kombat into a strategic team-based collection RPG with fast-paced, group melee combat that both new and existing fans can enjoy.”

This isn’t the first time the Mortal Kombat franchise is making an entry in the mobile world, though. Another popular title, Mortal Kombat Mobile has been available since 2015 and reached over 150 million installs in its lifetime.
