It appears Studio Onoma isn’t a Square Enix project as reported earlier, but a rebranding project for the recently acquired Square Enix Montréal (by Embracer Group). The mobile game developer (makers of Deus Ex Go, Hitman Go, and Lara Craft Go) simply rebranded as Studio Onoma and will continue to work on making mobile titles.

Square Enix Montréal, alongside Crystal Dynamic and Eidos-Montréal, was acquired by Embracer Group back in May 2022 for $300 million, and the acquisition was finalized in late August. Embracer also bought the rights to popular titles like Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Legacy of Kain, and a few others.

The developer shared an official blog post announcing the rebranding and the reason behind it. The studio says “Names are the beginning of stories – of our story as individuals and as a community,” and adds that it took them nearly five months to develop the new brand identity that fits their refined vision and the gaming stories they want to share with the world.

“At Onoma, we are creators, inventors, AND storytellers, and the experiences and ideas that we bring to life connect us to each other and to players.”

Studio Onoma

The studio explains why it has picked the name Onoma with the following words:

“Onoma is Greek for name and names offer endless possibilities. Names breathe life into objects, persons, or concepts; bring them to the world – real or imagined. It is the start of a new experience, an invitation to go on a new journey.

Studio Onoma is currently working on three new mobile games: Tomb Raider Reloaded, Avatar Generations, and Space Invaders.

  • Tomb Raider Reloaded is coming to both Google Play and App Store and will have mobile gamers play as Lara Croft once again. The game draws inspiration from the original Tomb Raider titles and will see Lara hold her twin pistols once again.
  • Avatar: Generations was initially announced by Square Enix London, but the title now seems to be under Studio Onoma’s umbrella. It will be a free-to-play tactical RPG mobile game.
  • Space Invaders is an AR mobile game under development and is expected to arrive soon. The game will launch a playtest soon, in which players will get a chance to try the iconic title pre-launch.
