Who is Usagi Yojimbo?

Created by comic book artist Stan Sakai, Usagi Yojimbo is the protagonist of the comic book series titled “Usagi Yojimbo,” which has been published since 1984. The character is heavily influenced by classic samurai stories and Japanese culture.

Usagi Yojimbo is a masterless samurai, known as a ronin, who wanders feudal Japan in the early 17th century. He is a rabbit anthropomorphized in the style of traditional Japanese woodcut prints, wearing traditional samurai clothing and carrying a sword. Usagi is a skilled swordsman and follows the Bushido code of honor, displaying loyalty, courage, and justice in his actions.

The first encounter between Usagi Yojimbo and the Ninja Turtles took place in 1987 when they appeared together in the pages of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures comic series published by Archie Comics. This initial crossover was well-received, and it paved the way for future collaborations between the characters.

In subsequent years, Usagi Yojimbo and the Ninja Turtles would team up in various comic book specials and one-shot stories. These crossovers often showcased the mutual respect and camaraderie between the characters as they found themselves facing formidable enemies and joining forces to overcome obstacles.
