Upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 might be another reboot

Ed Boon, legendary Co-Creator of Mortal Kombat and Chief Creative Officer Mortal Kombat at NetherRealm Studios today shared a video on his Twitter account hinting a reboot of the beloved fighting game series.

Celebrating the 30th anniversary, Ed Boon tweeted “Does anyone know what time it is? #MortalKombat” with a short video. In the video, a clock goes from 9 to 10 to 11, skipping 12 and jumping straight to 1. Last Mortal Kombat game was MK11, released in 2019.

Latest reboot of the franchise was in 2011. Nineth edition of the game was labed simply Mortal Kombat and rebooted the series. Upon release, Mortal Kombat received very positive reviews and won several awards for fighting game of the year. It was also a commercial success, selling 1 million copies in the first month alone.

First reboot spans Mortal Kombat 1, 2, and 3, retelling the story with an enlightened Raiden, who has changed the course of events. It is not yet announced how the game will reboot the series again.

There is also an upcoming mobile game called Mortal Kombat: Onslaught. The game is being developed by NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games will handle the global distribution. The game is set to launch in 2023, but there’s no set-in-stone date for when it will arrive. The game is currently available to a selected few countries for early-access.
