After Valve announced Counter-Strike 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive concurrent players number sky-rocketed. According to SteamDB, on March 25, 1.5 million players played CS: GO simultaneously, which marks Steam’s second-biggest concurrent players record. PUBG is all alone at the top, with over 3 million concurrent players.

Limited Test for select CS: GO players might have caused the sudden hype around CS: GO. One of Valve’s criteria for selecting players for Limited Test is recent playtime on Valve official servers, trust factor, and Steam account standing. Players might be playing the game to increase their chance to get an invitation to Limited Test.
The current spike can be linked to the announcement, but CS: GO is still immensely popular; the game regularly pulls over 1 million concurrent players. When Steam broke its concurrent players record with 30 million players, CS: GO was the most played game during the historic day.
Counter-Strike 2 is expected to be released in Summer 2023.
