In a fictional universe full of fun and interesting characters, Daedalic’s choice for having Gollum as the protagonist is truly an odd one, but the company said they are making a stealth game and Gollum is the ideal pick for what they have in mind.
The Hamburg-based developer released a gameplay trailer in early July 2022 which received immense backlash from gamers and The Lord of The Rings fans alike. The gameplay video showed nothing interesting, and barely any gameplay at all. Quite a number of people criticized the old-looking graphics and lack of interesting game mechanics, which lead to many assuming the game isn’t ready to go live yet.
It seems gamers and fans were right as the company released a statement via the game’s official social media channels, announcing that “To honor the vision of J.R.R. Tolkien” and “To deliver the best possible experience” they’re pushing the release of Gollum by a few months.
No new release date yet for LoTR: Gollum
The German studio was set to release the game on September 1, a day before Amazon’s new The Lord of The Rings series named Rings of Power. Fans claimed the developer is just trying to ride on the LoTR hype and not worried about the game itself anymore.
The official statement doesn’t cite a new release date but mentions that the company will update fans with the exact timing in the near future.
The German studio started to work on the narrative-focused adventure-stealth game back in 2019 and it was set to release in 2021, but Nacon acquired Daedalic Entertainment and the release date was pushed to 2022. The Lord of The Rings: Gollum will release on PC, PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and Nintendo Switch.
There’s also a new mobile game called The Lord of The Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth in the works, with Electronic Arts at the helm; it will be a strategy-RPG game that’s free to play.
