French video game developer Don’t Nod starts the indie game publishing journey with Gerda: A Flame in Winter. The Paris-based company launched the Second World War game on Nintendo Switch and Steam.

The company’s first game as a publisher is Gerda: A Flame in Winter, developed by Danish studio PortaPlay. The game’s story takes place in Denmark during the Second World War. Players are following a German-Danish nurse Gerda Larsen whose quiet life changes because of the war. Gerda: A Flame in Winter isn’t a typical war game because players are not fighting on the frontlines. Instead, they witness Gerda’s life in the small Danish village of Tinglev.

Don’t Nod CMO Sophie Filip talked to GamesIndustry.biz about what makes Gerda: A Flame in Winter so different:

“It’s going to sound common, but we want people to connect with the game. It’s an intimate story, we want people to understand what Gerda was going through. It’s inspired by the stories of [PortaPlay’s creative director] Hans von Knut’s grandmother, it’s [World War 2] from a civilian point of view, a theme that resonates today more than ever I would say.”

“Obviously, it was not expected at the time we signed the project but with everything that’s happening right now we really hope that it can continue to push this message, having these conversations about what happens on the civilian side in the context of a war and what everybody can do to help civilians.”

Don’t Nod Entertainment is behind games like Remember Me, Life Is Strange, Vampyr, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, Tell Me Why, and Twin Mirror, all of which were published by different companies.
