Square Enix has announced that it will not invest in blockchain with funding from Embracer.

The video games and entertainment giant Square Enix applied to the Canadian Trademarks Database to launch a new video games studio in North America. According to the official trademark application, this new gaming entity will be dubbed “Studio Onoma” and will develop games and publish games.

Just about four months ago Square Enix sold Crystal Dynamics, Square Enix Montréal, and Eidos Montréal to Embracer Group for $300 million on a cash and debt-free basis, and the Japanese company invested some of the hot cash in cloud gaming company Blacknut.

The Japanese game maker made the application through its newly established UK branch, and per the official application file, Square Enix will also use Studio Onoma for creating merchandise such as printed gaming guides, posters, clothing, toys, and action figures. Studio Onoma may act as a headquarters for the company’s western operations, provided it launches without any hiccups.

Square Enix has been on the receiving end of some heavy criticism from its fans, especially after giving up multiple successful franchises to Embracer, and showing great interest in Web3 gaming. The company recently partnered up with Enjin to make Final Fantasy NFTs.

Not too long ago, a spokesperson for Square Enix said the company will continue creating and publishing games for the western market, and this new development certainly backs that statement.

The application was first caught by VGC, thanks for the heads up friends!
