Gardens, a game developer known for titles like Journey, What Remains of Edith Finch, and Marvel’s Spider-Man, has announced a collaboration with coherence, a company specializing in multiplayer network engines. This partnership comes as Gardens revealed that they secured $31.3 million in funding, driven by a playable demo showcased at GDC.
The upcoming project by Gardens is an action RPG set in a fantasy wilderness, incorporating multiplayer co-op elements. The game emphasizes interactive experiences among players as they work together to explore the world, solve puzzles, and awaken dormant magic. By leveraging coherence’s network engine right from the start, Gardens’ development team, despite being initially small, has created a multiplayer RPG that attracted the attention of prominent investors such as Lightspeed Venture Partners and Krafton.
coherence co-founder and CEO Dino Patti said:
“Giving developers the tools they need to innovate with multiplayer design was the key goal with coherence from the very start, so seeing what Gardens are doing with our technology has been absolutely amazing. They are creating something truly original, and their work makes me extremely excited about the future of multiplayer gaming”.
coherence’s network engine aligns perfectly with Gardens’ vision as it seeks to redefine how multiplayer games are designed. The engine has empowered the talented developers at Gardens to combine indie-like design innovation and creativity with a global ambition and commercial focus. Notably, one of the engine’s standout features is its accessibility; designers can utilize it without any coding knowledge, with a robust set of tools allowing for the quick creation of working multiplayer prototypes in mere minutes. This open and highly scalable offering caters to major studios and small indie teams, providing an intuitive and efficient platform for creating, testing, and deploying networked games.
Co-founded by Dino Patti, a co-founder of Playdead, and Tadej Gregoric, coherence has recently reached a significant milestone with the release of version 1.0. The latest release of the engine introduces features and innovations to the multiplayer games space.
