Just this week, ESA’s president and CEO Stan Pierre-Louis announced the return of E3 in 2023, and at the end of the Summer Game Fest (SGF), the host Geoff Keighley said SGF will take place in-person and digital as well.
It’s no surprise to hear that Summer Game Fest will be back in 2023, but given how the event has been digital-only thus far, it will be interesting to see how this hybrid version will pan out. E3 has been the heart of the video games industry for the longest time but even pre-covid the hype around the expo was slowly decreasing. In that context, Keighley’s Summer Game Fest offered a breath of fresh air to gamers, coming up with modern solutions to pandemic-related obstacles.
The organizer and host Geoff Keigley said “I’m excited to share that Summer Game Fest will return in June 2023 as a digital and in-person event, to bring the gaming community together.”
Summer Game Fest launched back in 2020 to fill the gap left by the cancellation of E3, and it was widely successful. SGF is partnered with pretty much every video games industry giant at this point. With years and years of experience under his belt, Geoff Keighley can certainly cook up an in-person event, and there’s surely a high demand for it too.
ESA — the organization behind E3— canceled E3 2020 and 2022 outright, meanwhile having E3 2021 side by side with Summer Game Fest last year. Time will tell if the competition will be healthy for the industry or not. Fingers crossed for the best outcome for the gamers and the industry, of course.
