Despite recently launching Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, which garnered positive acclaim for its squad-based stealth strategy mechanics, the company shared through a blog post on its official website that this latest release would mark its final contribution. Co-founders Dominik Abé and Johannes Roth attributed the closure to the toll of developing larger-scale projects, expressing concerns about personal well-being.
The statement on the blog post read:
“As we look back at our 15-year journey crafting games (and crying about it). We feel grateful for the incredible love and support we received from all of you. We cherished every game we made and feel proud of what we were able to accomplish as a studio. At the same time, dedicating the past decade and a half of our lives to working on increasingly ambitious games took a heavy personal toll on us and our families. After the release of Shadow Gambit, we decided it was the right time to prioritize our well-being and to pull the brakes instead of signing up for another multi-year production cycle.”
In the coming months, Mimimi Games will gradually wind down its operations. The blog post further detailed that efforts are being made to assist its employees in finding new opportunities, coupled with a provided bonus to aid in their transitions.
The studio’s decision to cease operations has been met with disappointment, as both Desperados 3 and Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun have been consistently well-received, earning respective scores of 86 and 92 on review. Recognizing the significance of choosing one’s exit, particularly for achieving a healthier work-life balance, has resonated with many. Nonetheless, concerns about the employees affected by the studio’s closure have been raised.
Mimimi Games has expressed intentions to continue supporting Shadow Gambit for a while, with plans for a forthcoming patch and substantial content update. The studio emphasized its focus now on fulfilling obligations as Managing Directors and maintaining support for the existing game. While the future remains uncertain for the founders, they affirmed their enduring passion for the game industry.
