Since launching its popular Switch console six years ago, Japanese company Nintendo has enjoyed colossal revenue growth. According to Nintendo’s earnings briefs, the company has generated almost $63 billion in net sales revenue from Switch alone.
After the disappointment Wii U created, Switch strengthened the company’s hand against its rival console giants, PlayStation and Xbox. Its dual functionality as a portable and home console contributed to its popularity in the game community and increased sales.
Nintendo’s net sales doubled to $9.95 billion in 2018 from $4.36 billion in 2017 and rose to $12.1 billion in 2020. In 2021, the company broke its record with almost $16 billion in net sales, up 32% from the previous year. Despite a drop to just over $14 billion in 2022, sales still show a 40% increase compared to 2018.
Nintendo’s largest market is the Americas, contributing over one-third of the company’s annual revenue. Between 2018 and 2022, Nintendo grossed almost $22.5 billion in the region, surpassing Europe and Japan combined. The company has become the most popular gaming company in the United States, beating local giants Electronic Arts, Epic Games, and Activision Blizzard.
Despite large game companies in the US worth billions of dollars, Nintendo’s popularity among gamers is tremendous. The company’s strong sales figures reflect this. Sales in Europe brought in $13.2 billion in the same five-year period, while the Japanese market generated $11.8 billion in sales revenue, both figures falling behind the Americas.
