Saudi Arabia continues to pursue the goal of becoming a significant esports hub with its private sector and governmental bodies. In 2017, The Saudi Esports Federation (SEF) was established as the governing body for elite gaming athletes and the gaming community in Saudi Arabia. Since its inception, SEF has organized top-tier national and international tournaments, attracted local investments, and collaborated with global developers. SEF aims to develop Saudi Arabia into a global gaming hub, forming strategic partnerships to address challenges and contribute to positive change.
More recently, Qiddiya City unveiled plans for the world’s first gaming and esports district. Positioned at the heart of Qiddiya City, this district aims to position Saudi Arabia as a global hub for gaming and esports, boasting four cutting-edge esports venues to host major global events.
With a combined seating capacity of 73,000, these venues are designed to attract up to 10 million visitors annually, creating a vibrant esports community within the Kingdom. The district will not only serve as a host for elite esports tournaments but will also provide a permanent base for up to 25 esports clubs, fostering a dynamic ecosystem for living, training, and competing.
Furthermore, Qiddiya City’s Gaming & Esports District integrates gaming spaces with retail, dining, and entertainment options, envisioning a unique environment where gamers can live, work, and play. The district spans over 500,000 square meters, showcasing Saudi Arabia’s commitment to positioning itself as a global player in the gaming and esports industry by 2030.
The latest step in Saudi Arabia’s endeavor to become a significant hub came from the Saudi Council of Ministers. It is the cabinet of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, led by the king, and consists of the king, the crown prince, and the cabinet ministers. The Council recently agreed on establishing The Saudi Video Games & Esports Authority.
While the extent of the jurisdiction, responsibilities, and the details of its scope of activities are not announced in detail, it’s a significant indication that the local government’s focus on video games and esports, along with its intention to become a major esports hub.
