Xbox announced that they are working with Epic Games to make Fortnite accessible on browser-enabled devices. Due to several disagreements between Epic and Apple, users had trouble accessing Fortnite from their Apple devices.
Fortnite will be the first free game on Microsoft’s cloud gaming system. Microsoft, which currently offers a game library service to users with the name Xbox Game Pass -also known as Microsoft Game Pass- will now enable its users to play games on any device without downloading, thanks to its cloud gaming system.
Apple banned Fortnite from the App Store in 2020 because Fortnite offered players in-game payment options, which was not in line with Apple policy. For this reason, iPhone and iPad users could not access the game. Thanks to the new system, users will be able to play Fortnite via the browser on their mobile devices such as iPhone and iPad.
Catherine Gluckstein, Vice President of Xbox Cloud Gaming, said:
“It’s an important step to add a free-to-play title to the cloud gaming catalogue as we continue our cloud journey. We’re starting with Fortnite and will look to bring more free-to-play games people love in the future.”
Tim Sweeney, Founder, and CEO of Epic Games, announced this news on his Twitter account:
“Monumental news everyone! Fortnite is now available to play FOR FREE streaming to web browsers on iPhone, iPad, and Android via Xbox Cloud. No subscription required, no 30% Apple tax.”
