World’s Edge, an American video game maker that operates under Xbox Game Studios announced that its bringing Age of Empires to iOS and Android devices. This isn’t the first time Microsoft tried to bring Age of Empires to mobile, but this time the gaming entity promises a more faithful adaptation that will catch the spirit of the original titles.

Microsoft’s earlier attempts to break into to mobile gaming market with the Age of Empires brand were quite a failure, as both Age of Empires: Castle Siege (2014) and Age of Empires: World Domination (2015) tracked badly and were abandoned shortly afterward.
This time Xbox is leaving the job to World’s Edge, the US-based studio behind AoE II and III Definitive Editions and Age of Empires IV. The game maker is also responsible for porting these titles to Xbox Series X and S.
TiMi Studios, a Tencent-owned mobile gaming giant behind major hits like Honor of Kings and Arena of Valor will work with World’s Edge on Age of Empires Mobile, so that should be a relief. The Shenzhen-based mobile game maker also worked on Call of Duty: Mobile with Activision and partnered with Nintendo for developing Pokemon Unite.
The announcement of Age of Empires Mobile comes with a brief cinematic trailer showing a few hundred cavalry units charging out of a castle on a dirt road, passing by curious villagers. World’s Edge is yet to show anything related to gameplay.
The teaser video had this message accompanying it for the curious; “Experience the power of an empire in the palm of your hand and command your armies with the touch of a finger.”
Time will tell if the studio is stretching its workforce too thin or not as it’s toiling on porting two existing definitive editions to Xbox consoles as well as developing Age of Mythology: Retold (AoE Mythology’s definitive edition).
