Games industry events are exciting, energizing, and exhausting at the same time.
If you are in hustle mode, you need to make the most out of them. These few days can create opportunities that shape your next year.
Personally, I find it comforting to sit down with a close friend at an event and have deep conversations. But the reality is, we are there for business. We are there to build relationships, explore partnerships, and potentially generate revenue.
Here are some practical tips from my years of attending industry events.
Before You Go
1. Understand the relevance of the event
Not every event is right for everyone. Yes, you can meet someone anywhere, but how relevant will that connection be for your current goals?
Sometimes I meet people who feel completely out of place at certain shows. It sounds obvious, but do your homework. Who attends? What is the focus? Is it aligned with your product or stage?
2. Sign up to the meeting system early
Most people wait until the last minute. By then, prime meeting slots are already booked and your ideal contacts are fully scheduled.
Register early. Check the system regularly. Build your agenda step by step and leave room for sessions if you plan to attend them.
If you delay, you will end up chasing people in hallways.
3. Avoid back-to-back meetings all day
Back-to-back meetings can drain your energy and authenticity. I’ve done it, and I didn’t like it.
After your tenth identical pitch, you start sounding like a machine. Leave breathing space between meetings. Grab coffee. Walk around. Visit booths. Stand near networking areas. You will still meet people, often more naturally.

During the Event
4. Check side events
Do not stay idle in the evenings. Many meaningful conversations happen at mixers, dinners, and after-parties.
Try to sign up for at least one side event per day. Some of the best business happens outside the exhibition floor.
5. Don’t drink too much
This is obvious, yet often ignored.
Have fun, keep it casual, but do not lose your professionalism. Your reputation matters more than the free drinks.
6. Don’t oversell
This is a pro-sales tip.
Pause and observe. Is the person genuinely interested? Or are they politely listening while mentally checking out?
Some people deliver a 10-minute monologue while the other person is suffering in silence. Read the room. Ask questions. Make it a conversation.
7. Understand that events are a numbers game
Events are mainly for starting relationships, not closing deals on the spot.
Unless you are hosting a private dinner with high-level prospects, most deals will close later. Focus on building connections and follow up properly afterward.

Small But Important Details
8. Bring something back for your team
Collect some swag for your colleagues. It’s teamwork. Do not forget the people back at the office.
9. Carry mints
Too much coffee can ruin a meeting. A simple mint can save you.
10. Wash your hands regularly
You shake hundreds of hands in a single day. Your body is not used to that level of exposure. Stay healthy.
11. Learn how LinkedIn QR works
Please. It saves time and avoids awkward typing.
12. If you are in Asia, carry business cards
In many Asian markets, physical business cards still matter. Respect the local culture.

Final Thought
Industry events are intense, but they are also where momentum is built.
Prepare properly. Stay professional. Be authentic. And most importantly, enjoy the process.
Have fun and keep hustling.
