AMD’s FSR3 frame generation technology has debuted, responding to Nvidia’s DLSS 3.0. The feature is now available in Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum. Forspoken’s demo also supports FSR3, broadening accessibility for users interested in trying frame generation without purchasing the full game.
In Forspoken, FSR3 becomes available with update 1.22, while in Immortals of Aveum, the feature is live as of version 1.0.5.0, potentially impacting its performance significantly. As AMD had not previously announced the public release date for FSR3, benchmarks and comparisons with DLSS 3.0 are pending.
FSR3 is expected to enhance a game’s frame rate through frame generation technology, leveraging super-resolution temporal upscaling and frame generation for substantial framerate improvements. While AI-based upscaling may lead to image artifacts, frame generation involving the GPU creating intermediary frames for smoother gameplay could have significant performance implications for supported games.
Until now, frame generation was limited to Nvidia RTX 4000 graphics cards. In contrast, FSR3 is theoretically compatible with a broader range of GPUs, but its effectiveness must be challenged and approved. The Immortals of Aveum team recommends enabling the feature only on specific GPUs, including AMD Radeon RX 5000 Series and higher, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20 Series and higher, and Intel Arc 7 Series and higher.
Nvidia literally seized the game industry with its DLSS technology and has been expanding and tightening its grasp for a while. Every day, more and more games or versions of the games are announced to feature Nvidia DLSS technology. Benchmark tests and performance reports of the technology with various game is also not scarce. On the other hand, Nvidia’s nemesis, AMD, has been interestingly silent. Considering all the information available, AMD’s technology sounds more flexible but also slightly unstable, while Nvidia’s technology seems stable but not as widely available for its graphics card models. It looks like AMD is handling AI-based upscaling technology differently than Nvidia. However, whether it’s a desperate attempt to catch up to its rival or a clever shortcut strategy is unclear for now.
The flexibility and broad applicability of FSR3 make it intriguing, allowing users with various GPUs to explore the technology. Those interested can try FSR3 for free in the Forspoken demo on Steam or Epic or explore its implementation in Immortals of Aveum. With the impending release of benchmarks, the industry anticipates exciting competition between AMD and Nvidia in frame-generation technology.
AMD also released an article with a video and benchmark results of the two anticipated games with its FSR3 technology.
