Visual processing solutions provider Pixelworks has announced a collaboration with the Chinese-based global game developer, distributor, and operator Perfect World Games to enhance the visual quality of the mobile game Persona 5: The Phantom X. The mobile game integrates Pixelworks’ Rendering Accelerator SDK, connecting game content to Pixelworks’ X7 graphic processor to deliver a smooth 120fps visual experience with low power consumption on mobile devices.

Dan Xu, Vice President of Perfect World Games, said:

“We are very pleased to cooperate with Pixelworks on Persona 5: The Phantom X. Various factors need to be considered thoroughly in the visual optimization of mobile games. In addition to the sophisticated design of images, we need to ensure the integrity and vividness of images displayed on smartphone screens and lower the cost of power consumption in exchange for a longer time of high picture quality display. Pixelworks’ technology has shown us a smart way to achieve these objectives. As the cooperation between us continues to deepen, we hope to enable 120 fps gaming experiences of P5X on even more mobile devices.”

Persona 5: The Phantom X (P5X) is the first mobile spin-off of the Persona 5 series, licensed by SEGA and developed by Perfect World Games in cooperation with ATLUS. Retaining the core gameplay of Japanese High School Campus Life + Metaverse Exploration, P5X offers a new turn-based combat + role-playing experience.

Players assume a high school student’s role, navigating daily life and exploring the Metaverse as Captain Wonder. Collaborating with Pixelworks, the game’s production team integrated the Rendering Accelerator SDK to optimize visuals for mobile gaming, ensuring stable 120fps game visuals on Android smartphones.

Ting Xiong, President of Pixelworks China, commented:

“For most gaming experiences, immersion is the number-one rule determining user retention. Apart from incredibly faithful art design, motion processing is also particularly important. Both character and camera movements within the game need to be coherent and smooth enough to reproduce the visual smoothness of the original anime, thus helping players immerse themselves into the roles and enjoy a better gaming experience. We are honored that Pixelworks has contributed to reducing the rendering pressure of P5X on Android smartphones and delivering an exceptional 120fps visual experience on mobile devices. By cracking the conundrum of visual display optimization for mobile games, we hope the production team can free themselves from the heavy workload in picture quality enhancement and have more time for exploring plot development and gameplay mechanics, thus bringing end users the most fascinating-all-round game experiences.”

This collaboration aims to enhance gaming experiences by optimizing visual display, allowing developers to focus on plot development and gameplay mechanics, ultimately delivering a captivating and immersive game to players. Recently Pixelworks has announced another collaboration to provide its X7 processors for OnePlus Ace 2 devices. The short timespan between these partnerships gives the impression that Pixelworks is on a streak to extend its influence and get ahead of the competition.

The competition in the graphics processors industry is expected to escalate, between generative AI companies raising the demand for graphics processors, Nvidia shares surging drastically, and its long-time rival is expected to make a counter move. The reports on the graphics processor industry predict a considerable and potentially profitable expansion, and we’ll see if Pixelworks will be able to climb to the top and carve its name among these giants.
