Atari acquired Hipster Whale, the Australian independent mobile development studio renowned for creating the Crossy Road franchise. The transaction underscores Atari’s ongoing corporate strategy to expand its internal development capabilities and bolster its mobile gaming footprint.
The total initial consideration for the acquisition is valued at $29.3 million, structured as $26.0 million in cash and $3.3 million in newly issued Atari ordinary shares. The agreement also includes an earn-out provision of up to $10 million in cash, contingent upon the studio achieving specified financial performance milestones over the next three years.
Financial and Operational Performance
For the 12-month period ending January 31, 2026, the Melbourne-based studio generated $8.28 million in revenue and delivered $4.63 million in EBITDA, reflecting strong operational efficiency and high profit margins.
Since its debut in 2014, the original Crossy Road has accumulated more than 340 million downloads globally, establishing itself as a benchmark in contemporary mobile arcade design. The studio has successfully leveraged the intellectual property through iterative expansions, including Crossy Road Castle and Crossy Road Together, which have maintained strong engagement metrics on subscription platforms like Apple Arcade.
Strategic Integration and Leadership
The acquisition aligns with the broader growth strategy spearheaded by Atari Chief Executive Officer Wade Rosen. Over the past several fiscal cycles, Atari has systematically integrated legacy-focused and preservation-oriented studios, including Nightdive Studios and Digital Eclipse. Hipster Whale’s expertise in accessible, arcade-inspired gameplay mechanics and distinctive voxel aesthetics offers a complementary fit for Atari’s classic IP portfolio.
Under the terms of the acquisition, Hipster Whale co-founder Matt Hall will assume a leadership position within Atari’s corporate structure. Hall is slated to oversee Atari’s expanding mobile development ecosystem, directing projects across partner platforms that currently include Netflix, Amazon, and AirConsole.
Atari Chairman and CEO Wade Rosen said:
“Atari and Hipster Whale share DNA for classic retro-style gaming, and together we can lean on each other’s strengths – Hipster Whale for mobile gaming, and Atari for premium gaming – to significantly expand our mobile business. The acquisition of Hipster Whale is a significant milestone in Atari’s growth plan.”

Hipster Whale Co – Founder Matt Hall added:
“Hipster Whale loves arcade games. When we created Crossy Road, we defined our company’s mission: to bring the spirit of the arcade to new audiences on mobile devices — a focus that has resonated with players worldwide and surpassed 340m downloads over the past decade. Joining forces with Atari brings together what each company does best: our unique approach to mobile development and Atari’s classic IP, licensing strength, and cross- media reach.”
