London-based, Istanbul-founded speech AI startup Lucida AI has raised $7 million in a seed funding round led by Velocity Capital. The investment, joined by Next Tier Ventures, Look AI Ventures, Boğaziçi Ventures, Yapı Kredi FRWRD, and Ünlü & Co, brings the company’s total funding to $8.25 million since its launch in 2024.
The capital will support Lucida’s goal to challenge language-learning giants like Duolingo by building a scalable, speech-native AI platform that powers global communication. The funding will also accelerate product development, support the addition of more languages, and expand Lucida’s enterprise business worldwide.
Founded by experienced tech entrepreneurs
Founded in 2024 by Mustafa Girgin and Mustafa Sait Demirci, Lucida AI carries a strong track record of entrepreneurship. Before launching Lucida, Mustafa Girgin co-founded the HR technology startup Coensio, which was successfully acquired by the Turkish recruitment giant Kariyer.net in 2022.
Applying that experience to the AI sector, the team has quickly scaled Lucida into a speech-language model that holds real-time conversations, adapts to each user’s fluency, and provides instant feedback on pronunciation, clarity, and confidence—all without typing or scripted drills.

Strong traction and high retention
In just 15 months, Lucida has achieved milestones that most seed-stage consumer AI apps rarely reach:
- 3 million users reached across Europe, the US, and emerging markets.
- 2.2 billion minutes of spoken interaction logged.
- Seven-figure Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) reached.
- Hybrid business model serving both consumers and enterprise clients with on-premises hosting and end-to-end encryption.
A speech-first approach in a crowded market
While the language-learning market is dominated by gamified platforms like Duolingo (valued at $6.1 billion) and pronunciation tools like ELSA Speak, Lucida bets that making speech the primary mode of interaction—not just an add-on feature—will set it apart.
Mustafa Girgin and Mustafa Sait Demirci, Co-Founders of Lucida AI, said:
“AI is becoming a global race, and meaningful innovation is no longer tied to a single geography. With this round, we’ve partnered with investors who share our long-term vision. Our focus is clear: building a scalable, speech-native AI platform that powers global communication.”
Investor perspective
“Lucida AI possesses the characteristics of the types of businesses that the Velocity EIS Technology Fund looks to invest in: a strong management team, capital efficiency, and significant growth in a growing market. We are delighted to join the team on their journey.”
Thomas Lindup, COO at Velocity Capital

“Lucida is building a speech-native learning platform with a phonetic engine that provides more accurate pronunciation feedback than generic AI tutors. It’s on a clear path to becoming a category-defining company in AI-powered communication.”
Angelo Burgarello, Partner at Look AI Ventures
Future outlook
The global online language learning market is expected to grow to $91.6 billion by 2030. With its Istanbul-founded, London-headquartered structure, Lucida AI is positioning itself for cross-border growth, focusing on multilingual expansion rather than adding global features to an English-only product later. The company’s immediate challenge will be competing with Duolingo’s free model while proving that its speech-native AI can become the industry standard for fluency.

Lucida AI Fun-ding celebration
To celebrate the $7M raise, the Lucida AI team is hosting a special event in Istanbul for the mobile, AI, and investment ecosystem.
The gathering will bring together founders, builders, and investors for an evening of networking at a Michelin-listed venue in Beyoğlu. The night will also feature a surprise DJ set by co-founder Mustafa Sait Demirci and Product Specialist Hasan Ali Ozdemir.
