Meta’s Horizon Worlds, a virtual reality social space for Quest users, falls short of attracting and maintaining users. According to the Wall Street Journal report, Horizon Worlds currently have less than 200,000 monthly active users, which is more than half of the expected number.

Meta’s initial estimation was 500,000 monthly active users, but most Horizon Worlds visitors never come to the app after the first try. Meta revised the expected monthly active users to 280,000. Meta currently has more than 3.5 billion monthly active users among social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Horizon Worlds is limited to VR headsets where users can experience activities like shopping, partying, and playing mini-games. However, most virtual spaces have not even been visited once; only 9% of has seen 50 or more people. The report also shows that Quest also has struggles retaining users. Over 50% of Quest headsets are not used after six months of the purchase.
A few months ago Vivek Sharma, the Vice President of Horizon, announced his departure from the company.
Meta put Horizon Worlds on pause until the user experience is improved. Meta’s plan to launch a web version of Horizon Worlds for mobile and computers might also be on hold since no launch dates were shared after the initial announcement.
Meta had recently announced that its next VR device, previously dubbed “Project Cambria,” will be named Meta Quest Pro. The headset will be available starting October 25 with a price tag of $1,499.
