Nintendo Switch physical game sales captured the top list in early January
The first week of January is a quiet period for boxed video game sales. However, 2021 started with more than expected numbers for the UK.
Last week, more than 260.000 boxed games were sold in the country, which entered the quarantine process again due to the coronavirus. This figure is third more than what was achieved during the same week this time last year.
In fact, we can easily say that one of the most important factors of this growth is the Nintendo Switch. In the process following the release of the Switch, the return of the popular Nintendo games increased the sales of the console considerably. Sales of Switch games increased by 123% in the first week of 2021 compared to last year.
Especially Animal Crossing: New Horizons continues its success since its release. The popular game continued to hold its top spot in the first week of the year, despite sales dropping 47%.
On the list, Animal Crossing is followed by Mario Kart 8: Deluxe and Just Dance 2021, respectively. Just Dance 2021, as you know, is a game that spans multiple platforms. However, when we examine the game according to platforms, we see that approximately 90% of its sales are for Switch.
Meanwhile, RingFit Adventure was ranked 6th while the Switch version of Minecraft was ranked 7th. As the last Switch game, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe returned to the list in 9th place with a new marketing campaign.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons had a quick start, selling 26.04 million copies worldwide by September. In addition, Super Mario became the best selling game in Japan and the UK when the 3D All-Stars collection was released.
