Brendan Greene, the creator of the first-ever Battle Royale game PUBG, has confirmed that his next title will be blockchain and metaverse-related. The project is called Artemis, and the plan is to give players free rein in a virtual world that’s as big as the Earth.

A tech demo for the title named Prologue was in the works, but it was never completed. Greene explained his thoughts about the development process with these words:

“I thought we could build an engine and develop a tech demo at the same time. That wasn’t a great idea. The tech team was kind of split between trying to get the DLL working and trying to plan out and build an engine.”

The company promoted the tech demo with these sentences:

“Prologue is an exploration of new technologies and gameplay. Our aim with this game is to give players unique and memorable experiences each and every time they play.”

The experienced game developer plans to implement machine learning into the game, as it cannot be done with human hands alone when the discussion is a map with the size of an actual planet.

Greene has also stated that the platform should be fully open to the public and shouldn’t be revenue-oriented. He also mentions that in-game assets will be present in the game to allow players to earn while playing.

In an interview for VentureBeat, Greene talked about his fascination for EverQuest and Axie Infinity. The successful game dev understands that in order to create a gigantic world, he needs blockchain technology and and NFTs. He intends to use this technology to create an in-game economy that rewards the players. Greene is also aware of how dangerous the NFT world is right now, and hopes that it will clear out until Artemis’ launch, which will be a long way as it is a ten to 15 year project.

The biggest obstacle for the game dev right now is tackling the multiplayer issue. Greene admits that the team doesn’t have a clear answer for implementing multiplayer into the game as of now. Even though the project seems like the most ambitious thing the gaming world has ever heard of, it might well be the best industry achievement if the team can pull it off.
