Game engine maker and service provider Unity is releasing a new toolkit to relieve multiplayer game developers. The new toolset will improve server stabilization and matchmaking systems, helping to build games much faster and more efficiently.

The company introduced this set with its new “Unity 2022 Multiplayer Report” and brought many insights about multiplayer games. Saying that 32% of people playing multiplayer games prefer Battle Royale and FPS, the company also shows that MOBA and RTS genres are most popular in Korea.

Another finding of the report, which compared the period of Q3 2021 with the period of Q3 2022, was that the players paid attention to the cross-play feature. 91% of the audience who play real-time multiplayer games are turning to games with cross-play. This feature allows people to connect to the same server from many platforms and maintain their multiplayer gaming experience—many popular games today lack cross-play.

Unreal engine is one of the most crucial game engines that come to mind regarding multiplayer and FPS genres. Positioning Unreal Engine as a rival, the company says they want to focus on this field. Jeff Collins, Unity’s senior vice president of engineering, said in an interview with The Washington Post:

“We’re investing heavily in multiplayer game support because we see it as a trend for the last couple of years.”

Unity has been taking firm steps forward lately. The company signed a multimillion-dollar defense contract with the US government after its merger with ironSource. There is also a partnership with Microsoft to reach gamers on PC and Xbox devices and strengthen their RT3D experience.

Last week, AppLovin officially withdrew its offer to Unity, announcing that they are no longer considering a purchase. The $17.5 billion bid was made in August and was officially rejected by Unity shortly after.
